  • Rogers Outage in New Brunswick Impacts 1,500+, DownDetector Silent

Today Netstats detected an outage to Rogers landline customers in Campbellton, New Brunswick:

Campbellton is a city of approximately 7,000 residents, so an outage of 1,500+ customers would certainly impact a large percentage of the total population. We saw dozens of individual networks going down simultaneously:

Unfortunately, Downdetector didn’t pick up on this outage at all, even though they have a page dedicated to Rogers services in the city:

Outage detection services which use social media sentiment to detect issues often miss smaller communities, as they don’t have the population needed for a critical mass of social media complaints. By monitoring over 200,000+ networks individually across Canada, Netstats is able to report on outages to the smallest and most remote towns in the country.

  • Vidéotron Outage Impacts Thousands, Status Page Normal?

Last night Vidéotron experienced an outage in the Quebec City area impacting thousands of users. Netstats detected the outage at approximately 9:30pm EST (2:30am UTC):

This outage was also confirmed by reports on Downdetector:

Unfortunately, Vidéotron‘s own status page showed green and didn’t mention any outage at all:

Relying on internet service providers to self-report on outages requires full transparency, which very few companies are willing to provide. They usually require manual effort to update, and lag behind third-party monitoring platforms.

Netstats offers an independent and transparent view into ISP health and reliability. We monitor every carrier in Canada using the same methodology, and provide our users with data so they can stay informed.

  • Shaw Drops ~1000 Users in Invermere, BC – Downdetector Silent

Have you ever experienced an ISP outage where the internet goes down for short periods at a time? These outages are difficult to detect, and ISPs often don’t report them to users. But they can be highly disruptive to users in homes and business productivity.

On Feb 19th, Shaw experienced a ~25 minute outage in Invermere, British Columbia impacting over 1000 customers.

    Date & Time: February 19th, 1:20pm MST (5:10pm UTC)

    Number of Users: ~1000

    Location: Almyer, Ontario

    Postal Codes: N5H

Downdetector did not pick up on the outage at all, even though this happened at 1:20pm during a business day:

The downside of using social media to detect service outages is you often miss issues in smaller towns and places where users aren’t using social media. Netstats is able to overcome this by directly testing 200,000+ networks in Canada, whether they are in big cities or not.

  • Eastlink Drops 1000+ Almyer, Ontario – Eastlink Unaware

At 12:10pm EST, over 1,000 Eastlink customers were disconnected from the internet. Netstats detected the outage immediately, which spans over 8 individual subnets in the N5H postal code:

    Date & Time: February 17th, 12:10pm EST (5:10pm UTC)

    Number of Users: ~1000

    Location: Almyer, Ontario

    Postal Codes: N5H

Looking at the Eastlink status map during the outage for Almyer, no outages were reported:

Thankfully, the service recovered roughly 40 minutes later:

When you depend on an ISP to self-report outages, you are usually only shown the largest ones. Blips like these can severely impact your household or small business, even if the duration is short.

Netstats is able to detect and report on outages across the country, with full transparency and no bias. We also aggregate an ISP’s reliability score into our ISP report.

  • Downdetector Misses Rogers Outage in London, ON

Netstats detected an internet outage to multiple postal codes in London, Ontario last night where ~1700 Rogers customers were dropped off the network.

    Date & Time: February 13th, 3:30am EST (8:30am UTC)

    Number of Users: ~1700

    Location: London, Ontario, Canada

    Postal Codes: N6G,N5X,N6K,N6H,N5Y

The service was restored at approximately 4:20am EST:

Downdetector unfortunately did not pick up on the outage, despite the size and impact to customers. This is likely due to the fact that users were not awake to complain on social media. One of the limitations of using social media sentiment to detect outages is you need people to be awake 🙂

Netstats has the advantage of testing over 200,000 local networks in Canada directly 24×7, allowing us to detect outages without needing user feedback.
