  • Rogers Outage in New Brunswick Impacts 1,500+, DownDetector Silent

Today Netstats detected an outage to Rogers landline customers in Campbellton, New Brunswick:

Campbellton is a city of approximately 7,000 residents, so an outage of 1,500+ customers would certainly impact a large percentage of the total population. We saw dozens of individual networks going down simultaneously:

Unfortunately, Downdetector didn’t pick up on this outage at all, even though they have a page dedicated to Rogers services in the city:

Outage detection services which use social media sentiment to detect issues often miss smaller communities, as they don’t have the population needed for a critical mass of social media complaints. By monitoring over 200,000+ networks individually across Canada, Netstats is able to report on outages to the smallest and most remote towns in the country.

  • Vidéotron Outage Impacts Thousands, Status Page Normal?

Last night Vidéotron experienced an outage in the Quebec City area impacting thousands of users. Netstats detected the outage at approximately 9:30pm EST (2:30am UTC):

This outage was also confirmed by reports on Downdetector:

Unfortunately, Vidéotron‘s own status page showed green and didn’t mention any outage at all:

Relying on internet service providers to self-report on outages requires full transparency, which very few companies are willing to provide. They usually require manual effort to update, and lag behind third-party monitoring platforms.

Netstats offers an independent and transparent view into ISP health and reliability. We monitor every carrier in Canada using the same methodology, and provide our users with data so they can stay informed.

Thankfully, the service recovered roughly 40 minutes later:

When you depend on an ISP to self-report outages, you are usually only shown the largest ones. Blips like these can severely impact your household or small business, even if the duration is short.

Netstats is able to detect and report on outages across the country, with full transparency and no bias. We also aggregate an ISP’s reliability score into our ISP report.
